Jonathan Brickland BSc (Hons), MSc, MIEEM, CEnv, Director.

Jonathan’s academic background includes a BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology, gained in 1989 and an MSc in Ecotoxicology and Pollution Monitoring, awarded in 1990. Jonathan has worked primarily in the public sector for 15 years.

Up until March 2006, Jonathan was National Ecologist at British Waterways. Prior to his four years with British Waterways, Jonathan spent ten years as a Biologist with the Environment Agency. He spent two of these on secondment, as Project Officer for Pond Conservation. He has also worked on fixed term contracts for Southern Water and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

At British Waterways, Jonathan was responsible for designing, developing and implementing ecological policy, guidance and best practice for application nationwide. He provided advice to regional offices and project teams, and worked extensively with the media.

At Pond Conservation, Jonathan gained experience of project management, pond creation and management; sustainable drainage systems and again media relations. Jonathan’s Environment Agency role included the monitoring of biological water quality; assessing the impact of pollution incidents; advising on flood alleviation schemes and investigating the impact of low flows in rivers.

Jonathan has particular expertise in freshwater systems. He founded and sits on the steering group for the white-clawed crayfish UK Biodiversity Action Plan, which he previously chaired for four years. Jonathan has designed and delivered crayfish training courses for the Environment Agency and British Waterways. He has considerable experience with aquatic macro-invertebrates, aquatic macrophytes and freshwater algae including blue-greens. In addition, Jonathan has a good knowledge of the control of terrestrial and aquatic weeds, he is qualified to advise on the use of herbicides to manage weeds in or near water. He is a member of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management and is a Chartered Environmentalist. Jonathan also sits on the Pond Conservation Advisory Panel.
